Prof. Salaks has a medical background that supports him in his position to be deputy director of the Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the history of medicine in Riga and now as director of Riga Stradiņš University museums and collections. Even if he has not been awarded with a historian academic qualification, he has an extensive experience in history of medicine and museology. His mission is to connect the western views with the eastern views of the history of medicine. He is located is in Riga, but he is always in travel. By meeting a lot of interesting people around the world, he gets inspiration for his projects at the museum and university to further extend them internationally.
Among his research interests are medical museology, history of pharmaceutical industry of Imperial Russia, Russian-German medical relations of the late 18th – early 19th centuries, medicine and art. Juris Salaks has curated numerous high-profile international exhibition projects.
